MAXINE MERLE SMEJKAL JANUARY 14, 1914 - PORTLAND, OREGON OCTOBER 11, 1996 - VERNONIA, OREGON
MAXINE M. SMEJKAL, 82, Vernonia, died October 11, 1996, at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. Funeral services were held October 15 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vernonia, with Fr. Ron Millican as priest moderator, assisted by Lani Vandehey, pastoral administrator. Interment was at Vernonia Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Smejkal was born January 4, 1914, in Portland, to Oscar Smith and Ora (Lee) Smith. She was raised in Gales Creek and Glenwood, attending Glenwood and Kist schools. She married William Lewis Smejkal in 1932 in Vancouver, Washington. They lived in Vernonia until moving to Sweet Home in 1944. In 1957 they moved to Garberville, Calif., where they lived until returning to Vernonia in 1964. She worked at the Naval Blimp Base in Tillamook during the 1940s. In the 1960s she worked for Flavorland Foods in Forest Grove. Mrs. Smejkal was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Vernonia Grange. She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1993; her twin sister, Mildred Calhoon, and six brothers, Delbert, Clifford, Wayne, Roscoe, Kenneth and Robert Smith. Survivors include her daughter, Willamae Murray of Vernonia; three brothers, Sam of Scappoose, Ronald of Vernonia, and Raymond of Creswell; three sisters, Ruby McDonald and Beryl Cota, both of Vernonia, and Retha John of Sweet Home; five grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-granddaughters; numerous nieces and nephews. Remembrances are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, 6915 SW Macadam Avenue #130, Portland, OR 97219. Fuiten-Rose Chapel of Vernonia was in charge of arrangements. |
