SAMUEL THOMAS "BUCK" HEARING DECEMBER 16, 1919 - HAINES, OREGON JANUARY 15, 2004 - PORTLAND, OREGON He was united in marriage to Alvilda George on August 2, 1941 in Portland, Oregon. Following their marriage they have made their home in the Vernonia community. Buck and Alvilda celebrated their 62nd Wedding Anniversary this past August. Buck worked in the grocery industry. He owned and operated Sam's Food Store in Vernonia for over fifty years until he retired in 1992. He was a member of the Holbrook Masonic Lodge #30 A.F. & A.M. in Forest Grove as well as a member of the Scottish Rite and Shriners. He was also a member of the Oddfellows and Vernonia Lions Club. Buck was active in the community, having served as a board member for thirty-five years for the West Oregon Electric Co-op as well as on the board of directors for the Vernonia Credit Union. He served on the Budget Committee for the City of Vernonia for several years and was a member of the Vernonia Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the School Board for the Vernonia High School and Columbia County Education Service District. Buck was preceded in death by his parents. Buck passed away January 15, 2004 at the Porthaven Care Center in Portland. He is survived by his wife, Alvilda G. Hearing of Portland; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Sam G. and Audrey Hearing and Dan Hearing all of Portland, Oregon; two sisters, Virginia Ewart of Phoenix, Oregon and Evelyn Holce of Portland, Oregon; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Crippled Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, Oregon 97201, in his memory.
