LURA (Laura) E. CARMICHAEL, 85, who had been a resident of the Vernonia area for over the past half century, died October 23rd at the Lou Del Health Care Center in Forest Grove following a series of strokes she had suffered in the past 10 months.
Funeral services for Mrs. Carmichael will be held at the Fuiten Mortuary Chapel of Vernonia, Wednesday, October 27th at 2:00 P.M.. Pete Holbrook, Henry Hudson, Wally Noakes and Bill Wilson, all of the Vernonia Branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, will conduct the services with concluding rites and vault interment to be at the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery.
Mrs. Carmichael was born at Goodson, Missouri on October 31, 1891, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Alexander. She spent all of her early life in the Snoqualamie Valley, Washington area, moving by train with her family in 1900 from Missouri to Washington. She was married to Louis Carmichael at Carnation, Washington on November 25, 1909 and they lived in that area until 1922 when they moved to Clatskanie Mountain where Mr. Carmichael had a shingle mill, living on Mist route. In 1932 they moved to a farm near Big Eddy near Vernonia and then in 1945 to a place in Vernonia on the Stoney Point Road.
Mrs. Carmichael remained very active until her recent illness. She was a member of the Vernonia Branch of the L.D.S. Church; of the Sterling Circle, daughter of the American revolution; the Natal Grange and of the Nehalem Valley Pioneers. When she was 75 she rode a freight truck to Denver and just 3 years ago she flew from Los Angeles to Hillsboro with her grandson in a small 4 person plane. For many years she had made afghans and hand work and exhibits them and took many blue ribbons at various fairs. Her husband preceded her in death in 1956.
Surviving are four children, Mrs. Victor (Grace) Berg of Elsie Rt. Seaside; Ruth Steers of Vernonia; William Carmichael of Hillsboro and John Carmichael of Youngstown, Ohio. Also surviving are a brother Frank Alexander of Fall City, Washington; two sisters Caroline Parmelee of Fall City, Washington and Edna Hansen of Olympia, Washington; 17 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild.
The family suggest contributions to the Vernonia Ambulance fund or the Vernonia Branch L.D.S. Church building fund in lieu of flowers.
